By Josh McMullen – Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs

LITTLE FALLS, NY – In any good relationship, on any good team, sometimes you are asked to make sacrifices. That took on a different meaning at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Monday.

The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs and the Boonville Lumberjacks combined for four sacrifice flies, with Mohawk Valley picking up three of them in the 11-3 victory.

The Diamond Dawgs got on the board four batters in on a sacrifice fly to center field by Brody Rassmussen (Meridian, ID/Maine) to score Cristino Tufano (Babylon, NY/George Washington) from third base. The same thing would happen in the second; this time, it was Diego Tavarez (Spotswood, NJ/Wagner) coming home after Levi McAllister (Concord, NH/SUNY Albany) cracked a deep fly ball to left field.

Ethan Pues (Plant City, FL/Hudson Valley CC) extended the lead to three later in the second inning on a double steal with Tufano.

The lead shrunk back to two in the third on a deep single by Garrett Lineberger (Rochester Hills, MI/Fort Lauderdale). That hit would score Charlie Pellicer (Jacksonville, FL/Daytona State) from third base. It went back to three in the bottom of the inning, when Tavarez jolted a ball into right field, leaving Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/SUNY Albany) with a leisurely trot in from third base. Another run came in on a triple by Major Pellien (San Marcos, TX/Cisco CC), scoring Tavarez.

Boonville got another one back on a home run to left center field by Allen Hernandez (Willington, NJ/Howard College) in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Pellicer brought home Hugo Kohnhorst (Jackson Heights, NY/Mineral Area College) in the sixth and cut the lead to two.

In the seventh, the Diamond Dawgs scored four runs with two outs, helped along by a two-RBI single to left field by Pues.

That would turn out to be the final runs of the game, as Dylan Bedder (New Providence, NJ/UMass Lowell), Cole Yennaco (Windham, NH/Merrimack) and Chad Yates (Brambleton, Virginia/William and Mary) kept the Lumberjacks off the scoreboard for the last three innings to

Jack Montayne (Canajoharie, NY/SUNY Poly) picked up the win for Mohawk Valley (9-7), whose win has now put them percentage points ahead of the Oneonta Outlaws going into two games at Damaschke Field on Tuesday. Brandon Ward (Chillicothe, IL/Knox) got the loss for Boonville (5-10), who have lost five of their last six.

The Diamond Dawgs are back in action on Tuesday night for a non-traditional doubleheader in Oneonta. Game One will start off in the bottom of the fifth with the Outlaws and the Diamond Dawgs tied at 3. The Lumberjacks will be back on the road on Tuesday when they face the Amsterdam Mohawks.
