By Josh McMullen – Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs

LITTLE FALLS, NY – It was not a matter of if the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs would have a breakout game and snap their four-game losing streak, it was when.

“When” came on Saturday night, as Brody Rasmussen racked up three RBIs in a 7-1 win over the Watertown Rapids.

Mohawk Valley got on the board first, as Watertown pitcher Mason Collins (Cottondale, AL/Stillman) walked the first two batters he saw. Brody Rasmussen (Meridian, ID/University of Maine) made him pay with a hot grounder down the left field line to score Cristino Tufano (Babylon, NY/George Washington). Cole Yennaco (Windham, NH/Merrimack) brought home Diego Tavarez (Spotswood, NJ/Wagner) with a walk with the bases loaded to extend the lead to two in the bottom of the first inning.

Rasmussen scored Tufano again in the second with a sharply hit ball to left field. He would come home on a towering home run by Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/SUNY Albany).

Watertown got on the board in the third on a bouncing ball by Dylan Wanat (Buffalo, NY/Augusta) to right field. That hit would score John Panstares (Westlake, OH/College of Wooster) from third base.

Collins and reliever Derrike Goutremont (Chaumont, NY/SUNY Oswego) managed to load the bases in the fourth on two hits and a walk. Rasmussen picked up his third RBI of the game, scoring Ryan Frontera (Red Bank, NJ/Seton Hall) on an RBI groundout.

Bryce Phelps (Denver, IA/Wagner) picked up an RBI of his own in the sixth, bringing home Rasmussen on a single.

That was all Mohawk Valley would need, as returning Diamond Dawg Hayden Duke (Mattapoisett, MA/Salve Regina) followed up a lead-off hit-by-pitch with three straight strikeouts to end the game.

Jacob Lapham (Troy, NY/Hudson Valley CC) got the win for Mohawk Valley (2-4). Collins got the loss for Watertown (2-5), who are now on a four-game losing streak

The Diamond Dawgs are back in action on Sunday for the second part of their home-and-home with the Watertown Rapids. Mohawk Valley will be back at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Tuesday to play the Oneonta Outlaws. Watertown will host the Boonville Lumberjacks on Monday.
