Congratulations to former Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs Head Coach Roberto Vaz on being hired by the Chicago Cubs as Hitting Coach for Myrtle Beach Pelicans their minor league affiliate.
The Brooklyn native enjoyed a decorated playing career highlighted by begin nominated a Golden Spikes Award finalist, the college baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, in 1997 with the University of Alabama. Vaz was also tabbed to the JUCO World Series Golden Anniversary Team in 2007 for leading Northeast Texas CC to the 1996 NJCAA National Championship.
A seventh-round pick by the Oakland Athletics in 1997, Vaz played seven years of minor league baseball with both the Athletics and Texas Rangers. In 1999, he helped guide the Vancouver Canadians of the Pacific Coast League to a Triple-A World Series Championship.
