LITTLE FALLS, NY – After 32 runs on Tuesday night, the score was a bit lower in Little Falls, but the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs still kept it interesting on Thursday night.
Nolan Colby’s three-run home run in the seventh capped off a four-run inning for the Diamond Dawgs and proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win over the Boonville Lumberjacks.
Boonville got the first run of the night in the third, scoring Seth Bischoff (Grand Rapids CC) on an RBI single by Will Hill (Texas). Joe Crenshaw tied it up rather quickly in the bottom of the inning, sending the first pitch he saw into the center field bleachers for his league-leading third home run of the season.
Nolan Colby (Fairfield) gave the Diamond Dawgs the lead on a bunt that barely left the batter’s box, scoring Bryon Arias (Dominican).
Zeb Swangim (UNC Asheville) and Bischoff responded in the fourth with a pair of two-run home runs.
The Boonville lead stayed at three until the bottom of the seventh, when a lazy bouncer by Connor Scanlan (Fairfield) brought home Erick Diaz (Dominican). The next batter – Nolan Colby (Fairfield) – brought his teammate and Crenshaw, as well as himself home with a hard-hit home run to right field. That gave the Diamond Dawgs a 6-5 lead.
That would be all relievers Cal McBurney (Brown) and Caden Wells (Trinity) would need, holding the Lumberjacks scoreless through the last five innings to finish off the win.
McBurney picked up the win for Mohawk Valley (4-1), while Wells got the save. Jonathan Tetzlaff (Paris JUCO) got the loss for Boonville, who is winless in their first four games.
The Diamond Dawgs are back in action on Friday when they travel to Damaschke Field in Oneonta to take on the Outlaws. The Lumberjacks will have a day off on Friday before traveling to Utica on Saturday to take on the Blue Sox.
