LITTLE FALLS, NY – The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs and Albany Baseball Club combined for seven homeruns in their doubleheader on Sunday night. However, the Diamond Dawgs made the most of theirs, sweeping the Baseball Club, 8-5 and 5-4.

In Game One, the two teams couldn’t manage a run until the third, when Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/SUNY Albany) crushed a no-doubt solo home run to the Little League field in left. The heavy hit was Hurd’s third home run of the season. Levi McAllister (Concord, NH/SUNY Albany) came home a couple of batters later on a sacrifice fly to center field by Luke Nomura (Maplewood, NJ/Fairfield).

Brody Rasmussen (Meridian, ID/Maine) added to the damage in the third with a blistering three-run shot to left-center field. Rasmussen’s second home run of the season also scored Cristino Tufano (Babylon, NY/George Washington) and Diego Tavarez (Spotswood, NJ/Wagner).

The Baseball Club clawed one back on a solo home run by Aidan Zakarewicz (Chalfont, PA/Xavier) to left-center field.

Three straight singles brought Nomura home in the second, the third one from Bryce Phelps (Denver, IA/Wagner) bringing him home. Phelps would come home with Rasmussen after a hit to right field by McAllister.

Albany would claw back to within two, thanks in part to a two run home run to center field by Matt Thorsen (Ghent, NY/Northeastern).

Ripp Soto (San Marcos, TX/Western Texas College) got the win for Mohawk Valley, while Matt Bruno (Rumson, NJ/George Washington) got the save. John Gerfen (Brewster, NY/Cornell)got the loss for Albany.

In Game Two, it took one and a half innings – and one swing of the bat from TJ Schmalzle (Hawley, PA/Fairfield) – to get the first score of the game. Schmalzle’s first home run of the season also scored Max McGlone (Doylestown, PA/West Point).

Albany clawed another run back in the fourth, on an RBI double by Brody Kenneston (Ballston Spa, NY/LeMoyne).

Mohawk Valley pulled even further ahead in the bottom of the inning, helped along by an RBI double by Mason Snell (St. Johnsville, NY/Herkimer)

That lead would shrink to one, thanks to back-to-back home runs by David Bernard (Schenectady, NY/Herkimer) and Jan Avila (Bayamon, PR/Rutgers). That was as close as they would get, however, as Tyler Hodella (/Bridgeport) shut down the Baseball Club in the seventh to pick up the save.

With his nine strikeouts on the night, Bo Buckley (Petrolia, Ontario, Canada/Fairfield) got the Game Two win for Mohawk Valley (13-10). Jake O’Connor (Latham, NY/Herkimer) got the loss for Albany (7-15).

Mohawk Valley will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Glens Falls Dragons. Albany has three days off before another doubleheader against Amsterdam on Wednesday.
