LITTLE FALLS, NY – What was supposed to be a warmup for the season for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs turned sour quickly Thursday night at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

The Albany Athletics burst out for five runs in the very first inning and never looked back, knocking off the Diamond Dawgs, 11-4.

Gavin Gomez (San Marcos, TX/Cisco Community College) walked the bases loaded to start off the season in the top of the first, and Aidan Hicks (RPI) would come home on the fourth, from Matt Thorsen (Northeastern). Gomez then hit Ethan Farina (Saint Rose) to bring home Jared Russell (Sage). Another run scored on the next batter, thanks to an infield single by Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Dominican). A walk by AJ Fasolino (Saint Rose) brought home Thorsen to make the score 4-0 before the Diamond Dawgs had recorded a single out.

That walk, already the fifth of the game, chased Gomez from the game for Marcus Sanders (Reno, NV/Lassen Community College). Sanders struck out two before walking home a run of his own, in Farina.

Matt Thorsen hit a two-run single to center field, then Farina got another RBI on a single in the third to extend the lead to eight for the Athletics. A sacrifice hit in the fourth by Austin Francis (NJIT) extended the lead to ten, scoring Mark Teson (Frostburg).

Major Pellien (San Marcos, TX/Cisco Community College) got the Diamond Dawgs on the board in the fifth, rocketing a two-RBI double that scored Jason Campo (North Babylon, NY/Stony Brook) and Bryce Phelps (Denver, IA/Wagner). Pellien would come home himself on an infield single by Ryan Frontera (Red Bank, NJ/Seton Hall). Ethan Pues (Plant City, FL/Hudson Valley CC) would bring Frontera home on a powerful stand-up double to left field.

Farina got the Athletics back up by seven with a long home run to left center field in the ninth. That was all the Athletics would need, setting the Diamond Dawgs down in order to end the game in an 11-4 loss.

The Diamond Dawgs are back in action on Friday night as they travel to Utica to take on the Blue Sox in Game #1 of the PGCBL season. The Dawgs return home on Saturday night where they will play the same Blue Sox.
